Getting engaged is one of most important moments in our lives. That’s why, every time I have a chance to help a soon-to-be married couple capture one of those moments, I simply get very exited.
When I got a call from Ryan, I have to admit I was hooked right away when he explained he was looking for a photographer for his surprise engagement. The first thing that popped into my mind was that I would get a chance to play DETECTIVE! (Ok, that’s quite an exaggeration, but let me have it - it’s one of my childhood fantasies.)
Ryan, his soon-to-be fiancé and his family were flying in to Chicago for a baseball game. My part was to secretly follow them from our meeting place at Starbucks to Millennium Park, where he would propose.
As the day finally came, the weather was nothing but inclement. It was raining very hard. That presented a problem: I couldn’t wait outside in the rain, soaking my equipment and myself. But the Starbucks location he picked was so small that when they arrived, I basically had to crowd in line behind them, pretending I was getting something, too.
Although, I could not take a picture looking through the viewfinder [without giving myself away?], I managed to get some shots before they left Starbucks. Then, finally, I could play my role fully as Photographer/Paparazzi/Detective and secretly follow them to Millennium Park and take more photos. Take a look at what I captured below, as this is the series of photographs that embraces how special this day was for both of them.
